The Trojans practiced for the first time Sunday evening in pads. Practice at Howard Jones-Brian Kennedy Field began at 7:30 p.m. under the lights. To help bolster the quarterback corps, Garrett Green took snaps under center.
Notes from the football field (from Jake)
Getting to practice at around 7:30, the line to get in is HUGE. There had to be over 1,000 people in attendance. Stafon Johnson, Travon Patterson, Joe McKnight, Brandon Carswell, T.J. Bryant, Damian Williams, and Brian Baucham all take turns fielding punts. Looks to be some open competition at the punt return position.
Miscellaneous Notes
Brice Butler, Tyron Smith, Luther Brown, Jeff Byers, and Mark Sanchez are sitting out. Sanchez drove a golf cart all night, having fun on the football field.
The field was over crowded - little girl is walking and all of a sudden Clay Matthews comes sprinting by and made a leaping effort to avoid hitting her.
After a few practices, the running back order appears to be: CJ Gable, Stafon Johnson, Joe McKnight, and Allen Bradford.
7 on 7 standout plays
Mustain had a nice pass to Vidal Hazelton who got hit hard by Kevin Ellson.
Patrick Turner got sandwiched on a slant but held on.
Ronald Johnson dropped a nice pass from Aaron Corp.
D.J. Shoemate made good on a slant from Corp that took 4 guys tackling to take him down.
11 on 11 standout plays
-Stafon Johnson with some nice jukes for a long run and truck sticks the defender. He gets up, pumped up, yelling in excitement.
-Joe McKnight with some very nice juke moves for a long run up the middle.
-Corp connects with Patrick Turner on a 15-20 yard TD catch where Turner is covered by a defender and still manages to catch the ball.
-Gable bursts out with a long run but is tackled from behind.
-Garrett Green to Shoemate for a nice 20 yard catch and run. Shoemate looks really powerful, running over defenders. He also catches another pass back to back.
-Vidal Hazelton with a nice catch & run from Mustain with a few spins ala the Notre Dame game last year.
-Turner drops an easy pass. Shades of last year...
-Green connects on a nice lob pass to Jordan Cameron.

Drive 1 - Corp - touchdown to Turner

Drive 5 - Corp - FG (54 yarder by Buehler...could have gone 60!)
Drive 6 - Green - Receiver trips in the endzone, Omari Crittenden picked off the pass to end scrimmage and send the defensive players off in a frenzy.
Practice ended at 10:oo pm.
